Remedial Coaching

Education is meant not only to nurture the excellence already in a gifted person but also to uplift the not-so- gifted, so that he/she is equipped to safeguard his/her interests in independent democratic India. The constitution of India recognizes the SCs and STs as the two most backward groups needing special protection. Further, democracy demands the necessity to protect and foster the interests and needs of the minority groups.

UGC has been contributing towards social equality and socio-economic mobility of the under-privileged sections of the society through various special schemes. The UGC formulated coaching classes for competitive examinations for weaker sections amongst educationally backward minority communities. And it is realized that this could not gain the desired success. These have to be removed by remedial education, which would help them to well in studies.

In order to enable students belonging to SCs, STs and OBC (Non-creamy layer ),Minorities Communities, who need remedial coaching to come up to the level necessary for pursuing higher studies efficiently and to reduce their failure and dropout rate, the UGC will provide financial assistance for conducting special classes outside the regular time table during the xIth and XIIth Plan. However physically challenged students and General candidates coming from BPL family are also eligible to attend such classes.

Sahodaran Ayappan Smaraka SNDP Yogam College, Konni follows the admission regulations of the Mahatma Gandhi University and ensures 40% of the total intake constitutes SC/ST & minorities. Another 20% of the intake, the management quota mainly constitutes OBC & Minorities. To put in one more than 80% of the total strength comprise of this category. These students who hail from families of uneducated parents, require remedial coaching as they cannot get any assistance from their family environment.

As a part of UGC XIth Plan remedial coaching is started here in August 2010 for UG level. Based on the request from students, Theory and Practical classed were arranged by setting special time table for each class. Using the assistance given under Nonrecurring items, Equipments and Books were purchased, and journals were subscribed. This will include latest edition of books for all subjects including general books and dictionaries.
