Sahodaran Ayyappan Smaraka SNDP yogam College was started in the year 1995, July. Initially it started with three degree level courses. From the very beginning itself Commerce was one among the three under graduate level courses. Other courses were; Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) and BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration). Later the college started M Sc (Biotechnology) and M Sc (Computer Science) as post-graduate courses and B Sc (Mathematics) as undergraduate course. The department offers quality education to its students from the very inception stage and all the permanent teachers till date were NET qualified. During the life-term of the department altogether ten teachers were employed and five got employed in government service and one in another aided college as professors and left the college. The department witnessed a high employee turnover during its life-term which to a certain extent disturbed the work flow of the department. It started functioning with B Com course in annual system, with Co-operation-Paper I and Paper II as optional papers. In the year 2000 the optional changed to a very dynamic Computer Applications to cater the needs of job seekers. Again in 2012 it changed its optional to Finance and Taxation sensing a high market demand for such graduates. In such a way the Department of Commerce always tried to make rapid strides in tune with the changes in the field of Economics, Trade and Commerce to give a quality output of graduates to the needy. The M.Com programme of the department has created quality people for institutions all over Kerala. The department in its 23 years of imparting quality education to the rural district of Pathanamthitta, has also been able to create CA’s and NET qualifiers.
